Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
